Recently, seven gourds grown by a 75-year-old man in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, have unexpectedly become an online sensation.
Hanging from a wooden trellis, the seven green gourds — uniform in size and swaying in the wind — bear a striking resemblance to the opening scene of the beloved animated classic Calabash Brothers. Netizens have dubbed the seven gourds and the old man the "real-life calabash brothers and grandpa", attracting visitors from across the country to come snap photos and relive childhood memories.
The grower is 75-year-old Chen Jin'ao. In late March, he bought a gourd seedling at a local market for just six yuan, as he was drawn by the plant's symbolic meaning of good fortune and blessings. In Chinese, the word for gourd, hulu, sounds similar to the phrase for blessings and prosperity. He gathered scrap wood and spent two to three hours a day building a trellis and guiding the vines, a project that took him five days in total.
His wife, surnamed Shen, joked that he checks on the gourds the moment he wakes up — he really dotes on them. But she herself dashes indoors whenever someone tries to take a photo, afraid of getting in the way.
According to reports, the couple are bereaved parents who lost their only daughter to an accident years ago. "I treat these seven gourds as my own children," Chen said. "And visitors who travel a long way to come here, I treat them as my family."
Shen said with a choked voice that their door had rarely been opened over the past two decades, quiet and solitary all those years, until netizens finally knocked it open. "They are the ones who opened our hearts," the couple said.
